Tree roots, pipes and property damage — what's really going on
Tree roots get blamed for a lot in Bayswater backyards — and sometimes fairly. But the popular image of roots “attacking” pipes isn't quite right: roots can't crush a sound pipe. What they do brilliantly is find moisture escaping from an already-cracked joint, follow it in, and then expand until a small leak becomes a blocked, broken drain.

Removal isn't always the answer. Depending on the tree and the damage, options include targeted root pruning, physical root barriers to redirect growth, or simply choosing a smarter species when replanting. When the tree is the wrong tree in the wrong place, though, removal plus stump grinding stops the problem for good — and grinding the stump well below the surface means no regrowth.
